Bloody Mary picture

Not related to a virgin Mary.

Bloody Mary was invented in the 1920s by an American bartender, Fernand Petiot at Harry's New York Bar in Paris. The original recipe called for equal parts of vodka and tomato juice In 1934, Petiot added black and cayenne pepper, Worcestershire sauce, Tabasco sauce and lemon juice to spice up the drink for New Yorkers when he moved back to the States and worked at the King Cole Bar, St. Regis. Petiot notes, "one of the boys suggested we call the drink Bloody Mary because it reminded him of the Bucket of Bloody Club in Chicago, and a girl there named Mary."

Since then, enterprising drinkers have added celery stalks, celery salt, tried them with tequila, and often suggest a lemon wedge.

But don't take our word for it...

Morning drink

I can't say much to the drink cuz I had it a couple times. The first time I had it was Edgefest and I had just got up and someone handed it to me and said..drink up we are starting early! What a morning that was.

Seriously, now...
By Dan

Include 1/2 teaspoon celery salt in the mix, (forget the table salt), increase the tabasco to 6 or 8 drops, use a little more than a dash of lemon juice, 2 or 3 teaspoons worcestershire, add "floaties" (light sprinkle of pepper and celery salt) after pouring, and, above all, use fresh ingredients. You'll rate it a 5 too.

the queen of drinks
By shane

More ways than one to add a little pizzaz to Mary! Horsradish for starters, not too much unless you bring the shrimp. Second anyone can use tabasco (which I still do on occasion) but for a great variety in heat add cayanne pepper to taste. And to finish it off with another twist -- garnish with pickled asparagus! Hangover medicine with a life of its own.

Bloodies 30 miles up

It is the drink that you finish right before you head to the bathroom with some random blonde, while on your way to Europe. It is the drink that makes you feel good in more than one way. It is the best of her name happens to be Mary and she is the stewardess

Try a Bloody Mary with half pepper vodka and half tequila. Add horseradish, muddle a wedge of lemon, and garnish with a dill pickle spear, olives and another wedge of lemon.

I use Major Peters Bloody Mary Mix, I fill a frosted glass with ice chips to the rim, squeeze one wedge of lime or ice and sprinkle ice with salt, pour on the mix (with or without vodka), sprinkle with celery salt and squeeze a 2nd lime wedge to the drink, garnish with 2 olives and 1 marinated mushroom cap, or 2 olives stuffed with blue cheese instead of pimento, served with a celery stick, small straw and the garnish above. Sip it slowly and I personally LOVE to chew the ice chips! Enjoy the garnishes - it's delicious!

Defintely a good drink for Breakfast, but, any times is the the right time, in fact I have one now [03:44], Although I belive that Horsradish is a must! and I backup the opinion held that you should ingnore the recipes with regards 1-2 drops and go for 5-6 drops or a good splash of everything!

I agree with the idea of adding horseradish, and in a pinch I've used cocktail sauce. But for me, I've long since taken to substituting V-8 or even Spicy V-8 juice instead of just tomatoe. The vegetable blend adds and interesting flavor, and one could always claim that it's a new diet drink!

4/5
Odd, but good!

The Bloody Mary was one of the first drinks I actually learned to make - my brother taught be before I was even legal age to drink, heh. I prefer Spicy V-8, it's a nice kick - especially if you use the really hot green tabasco sauce. Adding lemon pepper works well, and if you can't tolerate alcohol well or just don't want to get too buzzed, it tastes fine with less vodka and more V-8.

Mary on a theme
By JC

This drink is a classic. A good variation is add a shot of tequila and a can of Tecate beer, serve in a big glass or cup.

try clamato instead of tomato or v8. tastes even better with cajun spices instead of salt and pepper.

Try the Absolut Peppar bloody mary from Fleming's steakhouse (multiple locations). Served up in a martini glass with a salted rim. Incredible. I'm trying to get the recipe.

Clamato Yum
By R.Kray

The best thing to come out of Canada before John Candy is the Bloody Caesar or just Caesar. Replace v8 with Mott's Clamato (clam and tomato juice)and serve. Also try the Caesaro. Mix a large, very very strong caesar. Dole them out to your friends in shot glasses, whilst sitting in the summer sun. Then watch everyone run around screaming CAESARO the rest of the day. Yum

LUV IT

This is the absolute best drink ever. It's best when you have celery sticks, carrot stick, and/or green onion stalks in it to munch on while you drink. I consider this a veggie serving for the day.

Bloody Mercy
By Doc Lia

This drink tops them all for me. Tastes good, feels good, and with the tomato juice it even is good for you. If you want to get the vitamins and minerals from your vegetables, add in some V-8 juice instead of plain tomato juice.

Starbuck
By Steven

I am 41 years old and have traveled all over this interesting world. Today, i actually drank my first Bloody Mary, prepared by myself, in my own kitchen and i am hooked. I conducted a little RECON on the different ways this drink is prepared, and in which cultures they are prepared in.. I believe i have found the PERFECT balance of ingredients, no matter what time it is made. The funny thing is that not everyone has the same tollerence to what goes into this wonderful drink. Some like it with a mild kick, some like myself, like a harder kick. I believe that this drink is a drink that you, and only you, can enjoy when you make it for yourself, using only the best ingredients, that can be found. I just wanted to share my thoughts with those of you interested enough to read this babbeling. I love this drink. Could this be a problem?????????? goodfellamanner@yahoo.com Steven.

Perfect Bloody Mary
By Jesse C.

I agree on the Spicy V-8 and agree with Dan ,add 6-8 drops of Green Tabasco instead of 2-3 & Garnish by adding (3) folded Pepperoni's on a small Sword Stick or toothpick. Awesome & mmmmmmmm..good......
