I think that the reason this drink has no response, is because it sounds gross...and too much effort has to be put into it to have it turn out right. Never tried it, and probably never will!

Had it at a resturant around Xmas time.... One of the best drinks ever!! But too difficult to attempt at home.

In the cold climates of the midwestern states the bars have Tom and Jerry Nights. I love them and they taste best with a sprinkle of nutmeg.

A Holiday Tradition
By SoDak Hoosier

Tradition is what this drink is all about. Far too often these days we associate easy with better. At times the effort involved makes the end product better. Is this the best drink invented? Probably not, but on a really cold night when you want to share tradition and a sense of the past, this drink is the first to come to my mind. This drink says Holiday, Friends, and Sharing.

The perfect drink for that cold winter's night... to put up the Christmas tree...to share with a special friend or friends...Cunningham's in Louisville, Kentucky served Tom and Jerry's throughout the holidays...MEMORIES of OLD LOUISVILLE

TJ Variation
By Sandi, Cocoa, FL

Ok, if you don't like that version, leave out the egg yolk. I have a friend who can't eat yolks so we beat the whites til stiff (in the blender) added the sugar and spices, put the brandy, rum, and hot water in the glass first and the whites on top as a garnish!! It was awesome. Think I'll make one NOW!!!

5/5
terrific

Makes a betterpresentation if you pour the hot water in the mug first, and then the mixture on top. Yeah, it takes a little bit of work, but you can make a big batch and have it over a couple of days (or share it with lots of friends)

YUUUUUUUMMMMMMMMYYYYYYYY
By Ellen

One may think there's a lot to go through to make this drink but, believe me, it's well worth the effort. It will warm your inners on those cold nights. I make a batch at a time. I make the batter first then put some in each cup. Add water and 1/2 oz. of brandy and 1/2 oz. of rum to each cup. Top with the nutmeg, Yummy :-P. OR, in WI they sell already made batter in the grocery stores during the holidays. I haven't found any here in AZ :-(.

Rich in New Hampshire
By Richard Barnes

Coming from South Dakota, Tom & Jerry Batter is sold in bakeries or in the dairy coolers in better grocery stores. This recipe may sound like a lot of work, but it isn't. You can make it up ahead of time and put it in your refrigerator for using later. Believe me, it is a nice hot drink that will create a nice warm feeling for two reasons: the drink is hot and the rum will do it's thing! Really an enjoyable drink for the Holidays and for any other cold occasion that needs some warming.

Tom and Jerry
By hardlee@pacbell.net

Tom and Jerry is a fine drink. It isn't that difficult to make. We have Tom and Jerrys every holiday. Especially pleaseing when served to a group of 6 to 10 people. Makes for warm conversation. My receipe is slightly different.

South Dakota Tradition continues

Growing up in South Dakota, this drink is tradition! I left 17 years ago moving to Ohio. My first Christmas here left me befuddled, I couldn't believe the grocery stores didn't carry Tom & Jerry batter. Not only did they not carry it, they'd never heard of it! Thanks for providing the recipe, every ounce of effort to make this "warm memory" is worth continuing the tradition for my family.

A great Tom & Jerry for the holidays
By M. Schultz

As I was growing up (in Minneapolis), we always had this drink at the holidays - I love it! Now living in Ft. Lauderdale, FL, no one has ever heard of it. Anyway..........I got the recipe from one of my sisters and I make it every year here now. It is not a difficult recipe by any means.

Taste of the Past
By Yankee Boy

Finally, I found the Tom & Jerry recipe!! I am a displaced Yankee and people looked at me cross-eyed last year as I looked in bakeries and stores for the batter. I have never made it myself and was about to order from a bakery back home but will certainly try this recipe. It sure reminds me of cold holiday nights at home with friends!

Tom and Jerry country.....

It wouldn't be Christmas in Wisconsin without having a nice hot Tom and Jerry (or two). Why go through all the work of making them from scratch? Buy it prepared from the grocery store... (just add the booz, hot water and nutmeg)

Rich men in Chicago always had Tom & Jerry for New Years Day. Best drink of the year.

This is the best part of the holidays! Don't knock it until you have tried it. For those of you who disparage this drink without the benefit of tasting it, ba hum bug!

Tom & Jerrys
By Fozzie

From cold northern New York, I want to say that Christmas wouldn't be the same without going to the Crystal Restaurant in Watertown, NY, for a couple of Tom & Jerrys after work or shopping. The "art deco" style, the antique Tom & Jerry mugs and the 1950's meal prices (turkey dinner $5 - creamed codfish on toast with sides, $3) - take you back to gentle times.

5/5
a fine tradition

I cannot imagine the holidays w/o this drink. It is not rocket science to make; what's the beef? My fondest memories with family and friends have been with the fine company of Tom & Jerry drinks all around; make a batch and have a celebration. My favorite cold winter night drink always and forever. I like it just with brandy. Barbara in Eugene by way of Kansas.

Tom's a Texan and Jerry's coming
By Batterrless in Texas

I grew up with this drin during the Christmas holidays. Big bowl and all. Then, as I got older I would buy the store batter (Trader Vic's was one I remember) and just put a dollop in a mug, add the booze and hot water...Christmas is back. But I've had to make it in batches here in Texas wher Tequila drinks are the tradition. Use powderd sugar for a batch that stays solid in the fridge. Ha a few friends over. Serve them these warm, relaxing drinks and enjoy the holiday season. You'll do it every year.

Wonderful holiday drink, warms a body good, perfect for thanksgiving, makes for very friendly conversations!!!!!!

5/5
Another variation

This drink always reminds me of the holidays. It's not too difficult to make and you can freeze the batter. We always used hot milk instead of water, and powdered sugar instead of regular sugar. We also added a dash of vanilla to the batter.

As a child, my German grandmother always served this at Christmas.I like it best with whiskey. It is a great festive drink!

Tom & JerryI

It's worth the effort. I do mine with bourbon/brandy mix. A thick batter (powdered sugar)helps. I have two bowl sets (black and white). Does anyone have a cobalt set?

5/5
Make a lot at once

I've made this for years, and it is a great holiday drink. I use some clove and allspice, in addition to cinnamon. Also, you can make the batter in big bunches, store it in jars, and then just add the brandy and boiling water when you want to drink one. I also make a bunch and put it in holiday jars and give it as Christmas gifts.

Great warmer-upper
By Sue

These are the best things about cold weather in Wisconsin! We make a large batch of these & keep them in the freezer. I prefer just rum, but rum and/or brandy are good, too. Sitting in an outdoor hot tub with one of these sounds like a great idea for tonite!

5/5

Yum! What would holidays be without it. Go buy the batter and add the alcohol and enjoy! Warms you up after sledding/skiing or anything!

In Idaho you can but this in the grocery stores and it is part of the tradition of Christmas! I moved to Canada and no one knows what it is ... pity!Great for after shoveling the driveway!

5/5
Minnesota Tradition

There is nothing like a good Tom and Jerry. I just got done making the batter. This is the best! Seperate 1 dozen eggs. Beat 12 egg whites until very stiff. Then mix in 2 Cups of sugar, and 1/2 Cup of Powdered Sugar. In a separate bowl, beat the egg yolks well, add 2 3/4 Cups Powdered sugar. Then mix in 1 can of Sweetened Condensed Milk. Fold the 2 mixtures together. You can freeze it. It's delicious....

Jones' Tom & Jerry Mix
By ~Kasey

This is NOT a difficult drink to make and it is fantastic! I would not consider myself a cook and after the first time making Tom & Jerry’s I can do it with out reading the recipe. Here is a better set of directions for a group of about 10 with several servings each (my Great-Grandmother Jones’s recipe): -Separate 9 eggs. Beat egg whites until firm peaks begin to form. Add 1 pound powdered sugar to egg whites and mix. -Beat the egg yolks until they are very thin. Add 1/2 pound powdered sugar to egg yolks and mix. -Fold whites into the yolks. Add a touch of cinnamon and allspice. This is now your batter (you can refrigerate for several days). -Preheat your mugs with hot water. Put one tablespoon of the batter, 1 oz. Brandy, 1 oz. Rum into the mug (or just 2 oz Whisky). Fill to top with very hot milk, stirring gently. Sprinkle with nutmeg. Enjoy!

Cheese Head at heart

These are yuuuuuummmmmy! I moved to New York 7 years ago and my first Christmas here I looked for Tom & Jerry mix. Nobody heard of it nor did they know what I was talking about. Then I found out it's a Midwest thing-Wisconsin. I had a Tom & Jerry every Christmas when I lived in Wisconsin. These should be available through out the US. I now make the batter myself and continue to enjoy one every Christmas. Now that I live in New York I may think of another name to call it and sell it here! Great Holiday drink!!!!!

Grandma's Favorite Drink
By Stacia Wilson

Tom & Jerry's have been a favorite holiday drink of mine since I can remember. My Grandmother use to make them every Christmas and serve them in Tom & Jerry mugs. Gram passed away 6 years ago and I am keeping her tradition alive. I got her mug set and plan on passing the tradition on in the years to come. I prefer mine made with rum.

5/5
Christmas memories

I agree with the "cheese-head", Tom and Jerry's were always one of my favorite memories of Christmases in Wisconsin. My mom used to make them while wrapping presents...(makes a tidious chore much more cheerful!) I would make them while decorating the tree! The people who shunned this drink REALLY don't know what they're missing!!!! Take the risk... and enjoy!!

Make your T&J batter prior to the party.
By Montano Mort

Keep it in the refrigerator and use it throughout the holidays. When it's gone, mix up another batch, or buy your batter at a liquor store. I think brandy is best, but rum is pretty good and so is bourbon. If you hadn't have one, dion't say they're not worth the trouble and if you haven't made one, don't say they're to hard to make.

Don't miss it!!
By D.Wendland

The mix is off! Beat the white's separate from the yolks. Add powered sugar to the whites by folding in slowly. Then add the beaten yolks, also with some suger added. The booze mixture is 1/2 dark rum, 1/4 bourbon of choice and 1/4 blackberry brandy. Boil water, 1-2 shots in a mug, 1-2 spoons of mixture. Add boiling water and garnish with nutmeg. Been making this stuff for year's at the holidays. Hell, I'm havin' one right now! ENJOY!

I just received a bowl and 12 mugs from my father. It's white with black writing. Thank you for the recipe. I had heard of tom and jerry years ago but never knew what the ingredients were. It seems to be a very classy drink. My daughter, daughters-in-law and husband would like it with coffee but my sons and I would rather have hot milk.

Not Thanksgiving without one
By K.Anderson

I first had this drink at a Swedish club in NY. Moved to CT could not find batter anywhere, but finally found recipe to make batter. Make it every year now. Always a hit. Make ahead and freeze. Will stay quite a few days frozen. I put liquor in first, then hot water, then batter, cinnamon and nutmeg on top. Stir just enough to until batter starts melting.

Not a lot of work
By jgmeinder@tds.net

Tom & Jerry mix is availiable at some liquor stores. If not look it up on-line. The key is to have nice deep mugs for this drink. Use one heapin scoop to cover bottom of mug, then add shot of brandy & rum. Pour in half of hot water, stir up good and then fill up the rest with hot water. You will find the more times you make it, it is not a lot of work

I grew up in Northern Illinois where you always went to the tavern on Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day to enjoy Tom & Jerry's with friends before the big family dinners. You knew you were going to sit at the Big Kids table when Dad let you put the brandy in your cup. I recently found the Tom & Jerry punch bowl with mugs on-line that look exactly like the ones we used in the late '60's early '70's. Merry Christmas to all.

Bit of Heaven Farms

Don't knock it til you've tried it. It's the next best thing to heaven on earth, especially after being out on trail all day, or winter sleigh or hay ride. Trust me it is worth the effort -however- I believe you can still purchase the batter at various Wisconsin grocery stores. At least you could the last time I was in Wisconsin around Christmas. Bought 2 cases.

Wisconsin is the only place.
By Troy

Beck where I am originally from in Wisconsin Tom & Jerry Mis can be found in any city 20 miles north of the Illinois border. It dosen't come in a jar. it comes in a plastic like cottage cheese container kept in a refigerated area. When you scoop out the batter is is a very light yellow color and has the texture simalar to cool whip but more dense. It flowts on the top and melts as you stir. All I have found is the original recipeit in a jar. The same reciept on here. If you come into wiscon during the holiday season you have to try this stuff. You will then see the light. This reciept is thumbs down compared to the up dated version only found in Wisconsin.

Like so many of the others--this was a Christmas Tradition in our home in North Dakota. I can still remember my Grandfather serving these. As a child I got hot water and batter and thought it was wonderful. People in Texas have never heard of T&J. I shall share this recipe with a friend who enjoys the tradition as well. This holiday will be better and brighter because of the memories remembered while sipping this drink.

Jamestown NY Holiday

Each year at Christmas time, a small bakery in Jamestown, NY sold Tom and Jerry batter, which became a staple of my in-laws' Christmas Eve festivities.

5/5
Slightly different recipe

My mother's father used to make this every Christmas. He was originally from Indiana, but moved to Texas, where my mother remembers this drink. He did it a little different, though. He mixed the egg yolk and sugar together, stirred in WHISKEY, added the boiling water, then used the egg whites to make meringue and dolloped that on top of the drink. The only time of the year that the kids actually got to drink alcohol! A bit shocking, huh? How times have changed! Merry Christmas!!

Tom and Jerrys are Awesome. A family tradition here, are they hard to make? NO. If you can operate a spoon you can make a T&J. The batter is just eggs and sugar with seasonings. I prefer my made with scalded milk rather than boiling water. The liquor and hot liquid cooks the egg in the cup. There is nothing better than a steaming cup on a cold winters night.

The history of the Tom and Jerry
By Carrie in Kansas City, Missouri

The Tom and Jerry, once so popular that stores sold special Tom and Jerry mugs and bowls, has gone into eclipse in recent years. The drink was named after a pair of dubious heroes in an early 19th century novel whose drunken and disorderly behavior was such that “Tom and Jerry” entered the vocabulary as a fitting description. Dip too heavily into this mixture of brandy and rum and you will understand how it earned its name. Source unknown The Tom and Jerry was a staple of blustery 19th-century winters. Eggs, rum, sugar and spices were beaten into a batter and kept in a porcelain bowl on the bar – an invitation and a sign that the holidays had arrived. The New York Times Magazine

Not Christmas without it
By Tami

I grew up in Iowa where Tom and Jerry's were part of every Christmas. After I moved away, even as close as Chicago, I couldn't find the batter anywhere nor could I but rarely find anyone who has ever heard of them. I quickly learned how to make them myself and now have started my own Christmas tradition in our neighborhood here in North Carolina of a night or two of having everyone over for Tom and Jerry's. At first many were hesitant and now they are calling each year to find out when I am doing my Tom and Jerry's.

Can you see the lazy women?

Not to include all the ladies here, but I can tell from some of the responses we are in trouble. If they think this is hard to make or gross, I'm sure they are good for nothing tarts that can't boil water to save their life. What do they think eggnog is made of? Oh! I forgot it's made in a bottle in a store...next to the deli made food. Now you know why men have a problem finding a good woman these days...we are still expected to pay when we go out on dates, and when marry we are expected to be good providers. young women today think legs in the air makes them a good catch. They want a Job, because children are to much trouble unless you have day care, why cook if you can order out. As a young man, we learned to cook, clean, work, even baby sit. It makes me sick, young women today are good for nothing tarts. they are self-serving and care nothing about building families up. Sorry folks for the hard truth, You might all like this old movie: Beyond Christmas. 1940 film with a little romance and even a Tom and Jerry toast!!!

Good Midwestern Drink!
By Stacy

Tom & Jerry's #1 Fan
By Happy Sipper

The first time I had this was with my inlaws in Minnesota. It was the pre-made batter and I fell in love (and a drunken state) after downing them all night. (Got caught up in the frothiness, what can I say?) After searching unsuccessfully for the pre-made I was determined to have a T&J and made my own. When you make these you have to ask yourself, "how many do I want?" Make a big enough batter to last you because if you take it a little at a time you won't be sober enough to aim for the mug, let's not talk about measuring. I'm sure the original intent of this drink was to "warm up ye ole innards". That is does! (As you can tell I like mine strong). Stop your whining and celebrate the warm of the holiday season with a T&J. The delivery is worth the labor! Cheers...

Definatly a family favorite..I only had ever tried the premade batter from the store but got a hankerin for it late one night during the holiday season. It is relatively easy to make, after sifting through lots of recipes I decided to wing it as I always do. Both batches came out great, even if they were different. We share our tradition of tom and jerry's with everyone including the kids (of course they get rum extract and not the real stuff). I recommend everyone try some..it will become a family favorite. Happy Holidays!!!!! Bug
