mojito madness
By Kassy

The drink is awesome but if done the way my guests wanted it, it is a bartender`s nightmare.I had to muddle 6 sprigs of mint with 4 sugar cubes and 3/4 of a fresh lime, add 2 ounces of rum and ice, shake; then strain into rocks or even better, straight up, then a splash of soda. I`ll take making an old-fashion any day! And these people would visit me twice a shift and drink 2 or 3 each. if that`s not bad enough, other people saw it and said, Oh, I`ll try one of those. MOJITO MADNESS!!! ( A great way to impress your friends at home though ) Bottoms up !

soda so good!
By George Sinclair

the featured recipe is perfect.....apart from the crushed ice! if you use crushed ice, you do not need the soda water. if you use ice cubes, as they do in the Bodeguita del Medio, you must use soda water.

Yum
By Claire

I like to substitute the white rum with gin, and then add a 3tablespoons of lemon juice instead of lime. Plus add crushed ice not cubed. I call it mojito mojo. OH yeah I add 2 sugar cubes not 3.

Need Angostura

In Cuba where this drink originated they add a couple drops of Angostura bitters at the end - makes it way better. Also, don't discard the mint leaves, leave them in.

angustora bitters

The Angostura bitters are aded only sometimes and never aded in Del Medio (where it was supposed to have been invented)

Man oh man is this refreshing.
By E. Wilks

Last night we were at a bar in Denver called "The Samba Room". I was looking for something new to drink and my friend suggested a Mojito. So I ordered one. I saw the guy starting to pour the Bacarti into the shaker. "Egad!" I thought, as I generally despise any non-spiced rums. But don't let that hold you back. As of late April 2003 the Mojito has replaced the gin and tonic as my favorite Summer cocktail. The Samba Room adds a sliver of sugar cane to as a wonderful garnish. I have to learn how to properly make it at home.

I would have to say down in Miami we substitute sugar cane juice for the soda water and sugar.

Spanish mojito's are the best for me. They often use brown sugar and aometimes even dark rum to give it a deeper mose excellent flavor.

Rums?

I understand that a true mojito is made with Cuban rum. The national rum of cuba is supposedly "Havana Club". Unfortunately due to the embargo, it is not available in the US. Can anyone recommend an authentic replacement?

5/5
MACHINE

OTHER THEN CUBA, I MAKE AN OUTSTANDING MOJITO. THE TRICK IS SIMPLE TAKE YOUR TIME, MAKING A DRINK IS LIKE HAVING SEX YOU MUST DO THE FOR PLAY BEFORE YOU GET TO THE CLIMAX(DRINKING IT) I SUGGEST IF YOU CAN FIND CUBAN RUM, WHICH IS NOT THAT HARD, I GET TWO BOTTLES EVERY YEAR WHEN I GO TO CUBA(I AM AMERICAN) MUDDLE THE SUGER AND MINTY STALK UNTIL IT COMES TO A SYRUP THEN YOU FINISH IT OFF BY ADDING THE RUM(IN CUBA THEY USE ALMOST ALL RUM WITH A SPLASH OF SODA IF YOU HAVE THE LIVER FOR IT gOOD HUNTING AND BETTER DRINKING

better solution
By slaaby@aol.com

A proper Mojito should be made with sugar cane juice as it changes the entire complexity of the drink. No hunks of sugar cane on hand? Try using 2-3 tsp of disolved dark brown sugar rather than white refined sugar (raw sugar could suffice too).

5/5
Mojito Madness

Just had my first and it was awesome at Bahamma Breeze in Towson. Sugar cane is fresh squeezed, hand crushed lime and mint, Cruzan citrus rum (yum!) and crushed ice. I think a splash of soda water. Garnished with a piece of cane and straw. D'arcy makes the best. Food is great there too.

More Than One !!!!!!
By I only drink when Im alone or with somebody

MOJITO I bunch fresh mint leaves 6 to 8 tablespoons sugar 1/2 cup fresh lime juice 1 cup white rum 6 cups club soda 6 cups crushed ice Wash and stem the mint leaves, reserving 6 whole sprigs for garnish. Place the mint leaves in the bottom of a sturdy pitcher and add the sugar. Mash the mint leaves and sugar together, using the tip of a wooden spoon – this extracts the mint oils. Add the lime juice and rum and stir until the sugar is dissolved. The recipe can be made several hours ahead to this stage. However, expect some discoloring in the mint leaves if you make the mojitos more than 20 minutes ahead. Just before serving, add the club soda and gently stir to mix. Partially fill 6 highball glasses with ice. Add the mojito mixture and garnish each glass with a sprig of fresh mint. Yield: 6 servings Prep Time: 10 minutes

Mojitos are the best - they make me very happy :) I like to use Bajan rum - Cockspur preferably - I like the more complex flavour of the amber rum vs white. Muddler tip: we use plastic beer glasses and muddle with our marble pestel. Heaven....

Bartender's Nightmare?
By Hakalugi

This is an excellent drink! And yes, most excellent drinks require a bit of detailed work. It's a shame that the bartenders of today don't exhibit the attention to detail that used to exist in the past. Instead it is quantity over quality. What a shame. So many of the best drinks in the world will never be produced by a bartender because the are just too complex (and thus time consuming). Check out the Grog Log by Jeff Berry for some historic exquisite drinks that you most likely will not find in a contemporary bar.

I am recently new to mojito's..The Cayote Grille on Pacific Coast Hwy in the Laguna Beach, CA makes the best I have had thus far...They make the traditional Mojito and a variation, using Parrot Bay rum in Pineapple, Coconut and Mango flavors..I love mixing the Pineapple and Coconut, wow...but the mango is also great...I now make them at home...using 2.5 oz flavored rum, a jigger of Rose's Lime Juice, 1/4 lime 1.5 tsp sugar, about 8-10 sprigs of mint and soda. You gotta try em...

Start with Ripe Lime
By Sean Game

The most important thing is the lime. Limes that are picked too early are bitter, no matter how green and juicy they look. And, you have to cut limes just before you mix the drink. You can't let them sit which also means you can NOT make this drink ahead of time. Lime will become bitter if it sits. I like using a 1/2 lime instead of 1/4 -- otherwise, Mojito Man's recipe is the best :) YUM!

My 2 Cents
By Karen

Nikkis in South Beach is definitely better than Bahama Breeze's, although it is pretty good. PF Chang's has a Pear Mojito, which is pretty tasty depending on who makes it. LEAVE the mint in! I like to mince the mint and then muddle...a little mint in every sip...tasty um delicious!

Awesome
By Katie

I had a mojito for the first time this week and this drink rocks. An easy way to make mass mojitos is by getting an empty gallon of water, add a liter of soda water, a liter of rum, and fill with minute maid lime-aid. Add mint at the end. It's great to bring to parties or just hanging out with friends!

Had my first Mojito ever at the new Wynn Hotel in Las Vegas. I'm addicted. It was so cool and refreshing after being out in temps over 100 that day. Thanks to the cocktail waitress there who recommended that over a Pina Colada.

Coconut Mojitos at Lotus!
By 2Cs in COLO

I tried the Mojitos at Zengo's in Denver and they had me intrigued. But, having just spent a weekend in New York, I discovered the Coconut Mojito at Lotus New York and its the best drink ever! It has coconut run, sugar cane, coconut milk and mint leaves. I'm going to try to recreate it tomorrow. Has anyone tried to make this one? It's heavenly.

Sometimes (most of the time) it is a pain to go thru all the work to muddle the leaves. I have found that Gino's Mojito Mix works great. Just add rum and soda. Google the name and give it a try.

By mojito on SoBe

to the person who posted about the mojito's offered by Nikki Beach in South Beach Miami big thumbs up - this undoubtedly has been the best place where i've had my mojito and yes you never get mojito's by the glass even if you are by yourself - pitchers are the way to go and believe me, you'll finish it in no time!

Mad Hattie's mojito news

everyone is missing the most important ingredient: mashing the stem of the mint sprigs is where the true mojito flavor comes from. The mint leaves are more for decoration. I was told this information by every bartender in Cuba who made the drink!

FLORIDA HOUSE INN MOJITO
By Brenda

I had my first mojito at the Florida House Inn in Fernandina Beach on Amelia Island. It was made by a new bartender named Linda and it was awesome. I am hooked. She made it from scratch but there is a Marti Mojito Rum that makes it easier. (Jose Marti stayed at the Florida House in the 1800s)

cuba convert

I have only ever had mojitos in Cuba, made slowly by hand with cane sugar, fresh lemon juice crushed ice and very little soda. or no soda. Luckily I live in Canada and can buy real cuban white rum. I am now growing mint out back, and can pick it any time of the year. There are many types. Do not get the kind that smells like toothpaste. Sniff the plant and you will know. yes ! leave the leaves in the glass. it is supposed to be a little messy cuz it's enjoyed mostly outdoors. Like the cuban people it is fresh, honest and highly sociable. If you are american, forget the politics. my travel agent is info@cubasitours.com. Krisz will fix you up through Toronto.

Make a Mint simple syrup!
By Mojito guy from CA

The key to any mojito is the mint, which can vary depending on how potent the mint is. Try this great method - create a simple syrup by using Bigelow's Mint Medley Tea (I use about 8 bags) and sugar, and water. Heat it up to dissolve the sugar. Place in a bottle and add this in place of sugar. It really works great and is always available from your refrigerator on a moment's notice. Still garnish with mint - friends LOVE it! Also convenient when taking it camping or BBQ.

Some people in japan call this a degrading fluid to put into your stomach. BUT then agian they eat live octopuss. DRINK UP PS. CRUSH or purree the mint and add to the drink. IT IS SUBLIME

And another way
By Cherry

The tradtional mojito is my new favorite drink, but I had a pretty good twist in a restaurant called Wish in South Beach- a "frozen" mojito. It's Rose's liime (I know, but you really gotta' try it), white rum, mint, sugar, and ice in a blender. I don't know the amounts but you can experiment. When done right, like they do, it's really good. And easier than making the other ones for a party, anyway.

Easy at home Mojito

Mint is the easiest darn thing to grow. One little $3 plant in a pot will keep you in Mojitos all summer. Try this: First put an equal part sugar and water in a small pot ove rlo heat. Melt sugar. Take off heat and put in fridge. THis is a simple sytrup and good for all kinds of drinks. Lasts forever in the fridge. Squeeze 3-4 each lemons and limes, strain out the seeds and put juice in the freezer. Now you're ready for Mojitos, anytime. Here;s all you do. 1 - pick 6-8 mint leaves and put them in a tall glass 2 - mash with a spoon a few times 3 - add shot glass of lemon / lime juice 4 - add shot glass of simple syrup 5 - add shot glass of rum 6 - fill with ice cubes 7 - fill with 7-up Sip and enjoy.

crushed ice, muddled mint leaves, splash of soda. Most of it sounds right but I like to use 10 cane rum, two real sugar cubes and a whole lime. I go for the sweet but not too sweet and refreshing. Coming from Tucson where its really hot and full of tourists I find this is tasty and versital.

2/5
there is a better way

first off to make a GREAT mojito you must use simple syrup NOT SUGAR!!! to make this it is 8oz water and 8oz sugar. you boil the water and add the sugar till syrup texture. add 2oz rum, 1oz syrup, 1oz fresh lime juice, mint, and ice in shaker. pour into glass then top with club soda and stir. This is the best way and if the syrup is already made the quickest. happy drinking

the most refreshing drink

I had this for the first time at a golf outing. It was homemade and how refreshing on a sunny hot 85 degree day! Awesome! I will definately try to make it for myself and my friends. This will be great for when we go to our Jimmy Buffet concert in September. Always willing to try something new? Try a MOJITO!
