Great drink!
By Adam

This is my favorite drink. Sapphire Tonic to be exact. Same thing but with Sapphire Gin. Its great. I love it. I used to really like vodka until I tried this drink.

By Brian

I disagree, it's a great drink with Sapphire, but its nothing like a Baffert's and Tonic. Whats Baffert's you ask? Its in a different league from sapphire, or tangueray ten for that matter. Plus, Sapphire is all image, and its becoming pretty cliche.

Very high faluting lads.A 700ml bottle of Seagram's Gin is $3 US in Korea and it tastes as good as any I have paid $8 a glass for. Climb dowm off your high steeds. My favourite drink is a cheap drink.

Gin Lover

I think all you guys have a point but i say middle groud may be best way to go. Beefeaters is my gin for tonic but i must say tangeray 10 is very good if your making docter money.

0/5
Tangueray is best

Why would you drink a gin and tonic unless it was a Tangueray and Tonic. It even sounds better than all those other ridiculous suggestions.

5/5
Just get the cheapest Gin

McCormicks works fine, you can't tell the difference after a few anyways.

One of my favorites
By Adam

This is my favorites, well, because it has gin in it. But to argue over what gin to use in it? Maybe with a martini, where gin is the main ingredient, but gin and tonic? Saphire is good, but trendy. I do agree though, Bafferts is one of the best, the bottle alone makes it worth it. Pick up some Baffert's if you can find it.

A favorite for a long time!!!

Gin & tonic is my favorite!!! Other drinks are good, but I always come back to a G&T. It's simple, tastes great, and all the flavors combine perfectly. But all the talk about what's the best gin for a G&T is useless. Almost any gin will do. The overall taste of a G&T comes from the combination of ingredients, not just the gin. If anything, I think it's more important to have good tonic than the gin itself. I've seen publications that say to use high quality gin in a G&T is a waste of good gin.

Simply the best....

Gets easier to make the more you drink. Never had a bad Gin & Tonic in my life. Life is good. You can't go wrong with a Gin & Tonic.

I would have to agree with you guys that I like gin and tonic. All of you seem more knowledgable on the different brands of gin and on the quality associated with each brand. Not knowing too much i would appreciate if I could get opinions on it as well as the price of each brand(I know i might sound a little cheap but hey if I can't afford one of the brands then why bother) thanks

Make sure to add the lime.
By Seeka

Tangueray London Gin + Grocery Store Schwepes Tonic Water + Liberal wedge of lime, squeezed into drink = One happy man. I'm not sure I like it too much without the lime, though. After getting a bit in, it starts to taste better too.

trendy or not
By josh

I don't care if my drink is trendy. I don't care if they've got chimpanzees drinking it on television, good drink is good drink. If you're not drinking Sapphire because it's trendy, you're drinking for all the wrong reasons. Cheers, anyway!

Tonic makes the G&T
By richard

I use various gins - Gordons and supermarket brands -only Bombay sahphire makes a better G&T . Only Schweppes tonic with actual quinnene makes a really good one. 1 twist of lemon, 2 fingers of gin in hiball glass, 3 ice cubes and small can of Schw.... heaven in a glass:-)

There's more than one gin
By Phil

Alot of you sound like "gin snobs" to me. There are a lot of good gins and you shouldn't discriminate. For those who don't know, Seagrams is a very good cheap gin. Tangueray, Beefeater & Bombay Sapphire are all very good gins at a slightly higher price. Try 'em all and decide for yourself which one you prefer.

Gin & Tonic hmmmm but you have to try it with a LEMON wedge - it's much better. I love the Tanqueray, but after reading about Ten & Baffert's I need to try them.

FACT: Taste is a subjective and personal thing.

There is neither a right ingredient nor a wrong ingredient when mixing a drink. That being said, my favorite mixed drink is a Tanqueray G&T. I like foods and beverages that are semi-sweet, spicy or sour in taste. To MY taste buds, Tanqueray is not as sweet as Bombay Saphire gin and for that reason, Tanqueray is my gin of choice. However, I am open to trying new things and Tanqueray Ten is looking good for a future trial. For Informational Purposes, It Is T-A-N-Q-U-E-R-A-Y. Although it is usually pronounced "tang-grr-ray", there is no "G". Drink what you like, and like what you drink.

5/5
I agree

Tanqueray & tonic is great, but it's not sapphire and tonic. It's got that taste that no other gin can give therefore making it my favorite drink

The tonic is the most important!
By Mike Lachance

Although i am a Bombay Sapphire Fan, i have gone "back" to Tanqueray Gin a few times (when i didnt have the money for Sapphire) ... The final drink *IS* different in taste, (and i DO like Sapphire G&T's better) the ultimate, and most important ingredient in a Gin & Tonic is The TONIC. Unlike one of the previous (lucky) correspondents here, i HAVE had BAD Gin & Tonics on several occaisions, here in Phoenix, AZ, in restuarants. They dont even know what good tonic tastes like. I had to ask them, after 15 minutes of trying to figure out what the hell was wrong.. to bring me a simple cup of their tonic. No gin. It was so awfully off-base. It was sweet and flat, almost like club soda and ginger ale. They had no clue. I told them to fix their tonic, they said it was fine. This is the most powerful factor in a good Gin & Tonic. Schwepps Tonic Water is the hands down Tonic KING. Accept no substitute and your G&T's will always dance on your pallete in a pleasinga nd familiar way. Now whether you use Tanqueray or Sapphire, of Beffers.. We are all individuals. Pick what you like, for whatever reason you like. It's your right as a Gin drinker.

PS
By Mike Lachance

PS: a few notes.. LIME is a must.. (whoever is using Lemon in a G&T... please switch to the simple mindset of vodka drinkers... Lemons are for Soda. Prices! As of June 18, 2003: Phoenix Arizona, competitive pricing: Bombay Reg. $15.99 Tanqueray Reg. from $15.99 - $18.99 Bombay Sapphire from $18.99 -$21.99 Seagrams, Beefeater, etc. Between $10 and $15... i dont even bother with these brands. Tanqueray 10 $22.00 - $24.00 I havnt had thge pleasure yet....

Nikster

My favorite is Tangueray. I have tried more labels of gin than you can name (as far as the cheap ones go, anyway), but the key for me is the clarity of mind during, and not having a killer hangover the next day. Tangueray is worth the investment if you plan on drinking more than 3.

Try Plymouth Gin for a change, in my humble opinion better than Bombay.

Fantastic
By Mike Frisco

A Gin & Tonic just can't be beat. My favorite drink! You really can't tell the difference between most gins once mixed with tonic water, so spending big bucks on a bottle of Tanqueray for gin & tonics seems like overkill to me. I would recommend Seagram's *lime-twisted* gin for this drink. It saves you the trouble of keeping limes on hand, it tastes like you really used a lime, and it's often the least expensive gin in the store. :) I like it strong, usually with a mix of 50% gin, 50% tonic.

hey guys, i fell in love with gin when it a friend of mine convinced me to try it. loved gin!! bfor was a strict whisky guy and maybe a peg of vodka but after trying gin, forget about the others! am from india and most of the people i met and also my stupid friends are whisky / rum ddrinkers. they think gin is a ladies drink!!!what crap! who cares cause i love it! and yeah i agree that with a twist of lime its heaven but hey i like my drinks neat...why mix water? that robs away all taste and yeah coke is great if u want to binge else i stricty avoid it. but never tried with tonic though. think i will do so now. and hey guys what do u think about the lime gin variety i seen here? should i stick to the straight gin or go for the lime flavoured one? and yeah all drinks made in india be it whisky (specially), rum, gin, anything u name it - is UTTER CRAP!!! its all IMFL(Indian Made Foreign Liquor)!! none of it will ever pass muster in europe or elsewhere so whether u r drinking a cheap or expensive brand all of its CRAP! specially whisky! dosent matter if its BLOODY JOHHNNY WALKER!! thats another reason why i dont go for whisky anymore.

Gin and tonic is my favorite drink. I enjoy the crisp clean refreshing citrus flavor. I have not compared many, but Trader Joes New Zealand tonic water is delightful, and Bombay Saphire exquisite, and a twist of lime delicious. Albertsons's A+ tonic water is dreadful, avoid.

Tangueray Gin is the only way to go. Please,Please use Tonic Water. I went to a Applebee's and order a Gin&Tonic and requested Tangueray. Well I got Tangueray and Something else. I sent it back after one taste and said what the F_CK! this isn't Gin and Tonic. The waitress told me it was. So I went up to the bartender and asked to see her Tonic Water or let me taste it. She pulled out a bottle of Club Soda. She said shes never seen tonic water and the Club Soda was a substitute for it in the bartender book at Applebees and then she proceded to show me the Applebees bar book. I LEFT AND HAVE NEVER BEEN BACK TO APPLEBEES, PERIOD!

T & T
By Derek the Red

I have to say that while Bombay Sapphire is my favorite gin, Tanqueray goes exceptionally well with tonic & lime. I think Tanqueray has a somewhat citrusy flavor to it anyway, and it just adds something to the flavor. But make sure they use real tonic and not a "substitute!" That's outrageous!

Tanqueray all the Time
By peter.grant@campus.lmu.de

For a perfect Gin and Tonic, add one part gin to four or five parts Schweppes tonic water, then queeze in a generous portion of fresh lime juice (or lemon, if you don't have limes in the house) and drop the rind into the glass, always over ice. You might be tempted to add too much gin, but try to avoid this, as you run the risk of drowning out the lime -- an essential taste in this very respectable drink. Portioning is key to a successful G+T. If you crave more gin after the first one, just have another drink!

In serving I am most asked for Tanqueray and Saphire, being a martini drinker at heart, I prefer Plymouth, Millers, and last but not least Boodles. All delicious but perhaps a little $$ for an all nighter. AS it has been stated above drink the best you can afford and miss out on the hangover!! Cheers!

BEST Gin & Tonic

There is no better Gin & Tonic than a Sapphire & Tonic. All of these fools choosing Tanqueray (or "Tangueray" to you uneducated) have seen one too many rap videos. Bombay Sapphire is hands-down better than Tanqueray and the other crap listed (Gordon's, for example). Your G&T should be with LIME. Try freezing some tonic water and use the cubes in your drink. Best G&T actually uses more gin and just a splash of tonic water. Try it.

Saphire is the gin worthy of blessing my gullet. Two G&TS and I'm doing pretty good. Three G&TS and I'm on the floor. I just wish the hangovers weren't so damn horrible.

Gin.... Period
By A. Q. Kowalski

I do prefer a gin tonic periodically... I used to be a strictly vodka man (Ketel One). Now when I do drink, I have a gin and tonic. While in college I was a bartender, I recall as a money saving trick we used to fill the tanquaray and tanquaray ten bottles with gordons gin.. A little tip (Gordons and Tanquaray are made by the same company, Tanquaray Gordon of London). Very rarely did any of my customers notice.....

5/5

By Vix

Tanqueray is good... neat and fresh and not flowery. Bombay is beautiful and sweeter... but the best by far, and thanks to whoever mentioned it, is Plymouth gin. You are missing out if you don't try it!! And frankly tanqueray ten is a little disappointing...

5/5
cheers

The tart bitersweet taste of juniper, lime and quinine is sublime. Cheap gin or tonic will not do..feel sory for the fella who got club soda. It is both the gin and the tonic that add or subtract. Shweppes is the best with Canada Dry not far behind. The gins though can make quite a bit of difference. Sapphire is too herbal and comes across a bit sweet. Boodles is somewhat similar but with a higher alcoholic nose. Tanqueray is the best to blend with tonic. Beefeaters can be a little strong on the alcohol bite, but runs a close second. You can't beat Gordon's although it is a little heavier on the juniper.

Tanquray
By Scott in PHX, AZ

Hands down, Tanqueray is by far the most sophistacated gin, and coincidentally it has the most flavor. Trust me, I've tried EVERY DAMN gin in the entire book, from grocery store brand to Bombay, and I truly agree that Tanqueray is the finest for the pallette. Mmmmm, actually I'm enjoying a brisk Tanqueray and tonic as I'm writing this.

I use two caps full of supermarket brand gin, ice made from still spring water (less chemicals) and good quality tonic, I also gently squeeze a wedge of both lime and lemon then drop the wedges into the glass to garnish. Served in a crystal tumbler it looks great and tastes fantastic on a hot day!

G+T are really great you can try adding a splash of sour mix instead of lime. makes it a little sweeter. if you have the lime though use that. of the gins i have tried saphire has been the best but i think the other ones i had tried were cheap ones.

for me gin and tonic are made of "canada dry" and tanqueray 47.3, after 1 or 2 I feel free to drink only tanq on ice. Bombay sapphire is appreciable but less flavoured compare to tanq. the one I prefer with tanq ten is of course beefeater crown jewel. cheers

By Christy

i was curious about gin and tonic after my friend told me it was like sticking your head in a christmas wreath. lol....and it's totally true. i'm the only one in my apartment who likes gin and tonic, so the huge handle of cheap gin is all mine. i'm a girl living with two other girls, and they all get puking gross drunk off malibu and these sugary mixed drinks, but it's clean and simple G & T for me. i want to try more expensive brands, just to see what the talk is all about but c'mon....not when i have all this other gin to finish up. ;) cheers!

Gin first but not Last.
By Gregor

Gin is the first alcohol I ever consumed & I got drunk on. I have sampled many kinds of spirits but I still remain a dedicated gin drinker. Pretty much know my limit before paying the price next morning. G&T is the mixture of primary choice,...haven't run into a bad brand of gin yet. This Sapphire stuff smells nice and is pretty aromatic spirit, now I just need some tonic to go along with it CHEERS!!!

Sapphire & tonic is v. nice, however, Hendrick's Gin is absolutely the most fantastic gin on earth. Once I tried it, all other gins tasted like utter crap. Trust me...it's worth it. Love the G&T, also love the dry gin martini. Heaven is Gin.

Do it expensive, do it cheap!
By Playweisz

I would like to just add a quick "hurray!" to those out there who may have it rough sometimes in the wallet, but still enjoy the refreshing taste of the classic gin and tonic. Although many of us would like our gin in a pretty blue bottle, the rocky feel of a Seagrams bottle, the nice little price tag that goes with it and its cheap yet refreshing taste makes it a true winner! So don't be ashamed my fellow friends in need, drink up in all confidence and enjoy!

4/5
Almost Perfect
By Bryan Ross

Gin and tonic is one of those drinks that can never really be perfect because after all, it's just gin and water. But it comes close to perfection because it tastes so good. I'll take a bourbon on the rocks over a G&T any day, but I'll admit this: the G&T is an artist's drink, and as an artist, I should know. I enjoy them, as do a few of my artist buddies. So I guess it's fair to say that a G&T is not only a good drink; it's a cultured one. BTW guys - I don't care what kind of tonic water you use, quinine or not (it's all water, let's just face it,) but when it comes to the gin, Bombay dry, not Sapphire, is assuredly your best bet.

5/5
Gin and tonic

the first gin and tonic i had was tanqueray, at a local chinese/thai/vietnamese restaraunt while i was waiting for my takeout. i liked it a lot, and the differant gins to make for a better drink. i had a really nice gin and tonic in a casual french restaurant here, and it was better than the 10-11 dollar a handle stuff i drink at home, as well as the tanqueray was, although tanqueray is damn expensive and hard to justify buying on my salary. Seagrams is 15-16 dollars a bottle and my next bottle was seagrams because it was on sale for twelve, a buck or two more than what i was gonna get, and probably marginally better. i disagree with the tonic water being a key attribute in the g&t. i dont buy tonic in plastic bottles cause its slighty more pricey, i but it in cans, and i dont buy canada dry or name brand, i buy the store brand, and the cheapest store to sell tonic is Albertsons, right now at a $1 a six pack. bars use tonic in a gun, and its all basically the same stuff, its not a complex science, buy whatevers cheaper. it makes no differance, its all about the gin. adding a lime wedge can be eliminated by adding some lemon juice or lime juice from a bottled source (REALLEMON) which i happen to have because people that live with me happen to buy it (why i dont know) but to me is not even 100% necessary, ive drinken g&ts without them and got along fine, its just a bonus. dont waste money on so called high quality tonic water. its not important. i use 2 oz's per half can. unfortunately this means i have to consume 4 ozs of 80 proof (40%) gin in a sitting, and generally get a little more buzzed than im used to, but the cans are cheaper to buy for tonic water. a lot of higher quality gins are even higher (43, 47%) but the gin is imporant, not the damn tonic, unless they give you club soda (ive never tried a gin fizz, but they just dont sound good, tonic's taste perfectly compliments gin and vice versa, club soda i just drink straight).

0/5
my favorite mixes
By Jane

First off, my gin of choice is No. 10 Tanqueray, although it is pricey. I like to add a splash of cranberry juice. When I'm out tonic, I'll use some sprite and a couple splashes of juice: cranberry, grapejuice, grapefruit. I agree that the right tonic/soda is VERY crucial, especially if it's gone flat. It doesn't matter how nice a gin you use if there's something wrong with the soda or juice you're mixing it with!

5/5
G & T

These are all opinions naturally, and in mine it's hard to beat a good G & T. However, using cheap gin is like wearing a cheap suit...you remember it (cheap gin) in a most negative way and it ruins your reputation as well. I agree, Sapphire gin is the best gin in America. In the Netherlands, however, they have Oude Jenever and Jonge Jenever (Old Gin and Young Gin), and both are of exceptional quality and tastes different than any gin you've ever tasted, it's almost like another type of liquor altogether. They're sold in beige ceramic vases and capped with a cork. It's not yet exported to America yet.

5/5
Tom

I love Gin and Tonics, but have stopped ordering them out because of the tonic. My opinion is that you can make a good gin and tonic with cheap gin and good tonic, but you cannot make a good one with bad tonic even with the best gin. In my opinion, Tanqueray 10 does not make a good gin and tonic - too much citrus. I much preger regular Tanq. Plymouth is my favorite, although Hendricks is moving up the list fast. For cheap, every day gin, I drink Burnett's. With fresh, cold tonic, a ripe lime, and good, clean ice, - it is pretty good.

0/5
Albert

I feel Van Gough Gin ($40 for a 750Ml) is the best gin no matter how you drink it. I've had it on the rocks, with Martinis, with tonic, and with several cocktails. It simply can not be beat. To be quite blunt, it makes Bombay Sapphire taste like dirty tap water. If you have some extra money someday, try a real gin. Try Van Gough.

T 10 -- Pricy, but worth it

To each there own, but I'm dedicated to Tanqueray 10 and tonic. I've always been a diehard Tanqueray man, but when my wife surfaced a Gourmet review, I told her it was a joke for us -- we're not talking martinis. She bought a bottle nonetheless. Well, one pass of the bottle by my nose and finding the "pine needle" aroma was replaced by a gentle wafting of citrus and I was sold. What a smooth drink! As far as that citrus goes, simply cut back on the lime a bit if you find it excessive (I don't.) Granted, Saphire and Plymouth also make for a very satisfying G&T, but I find T-10 make the most refreshing of all.

Good god, how I love a gin and tonic. I'm drinking Tanqueray and Schweppes right now and it is the shiznit. What a heavenly combo.

hmmmm

G&T is such a refreshing drink. Good on hot nights. It's the only spirit I ever drink - I'm mainly a beer girl. I discovered when I was younger it glows under the blue black lights at nightclubs. That made me very popular - everyone wanted to know what it was!!

By madhatter_vt@yahoo.com

After working a 12 hour night shift I was bored and had all the ingredients.. minus the fresh lime.. so I took a 12 oz common kitchen glass.. filled it 1/4 with ice... splashed some Rose's sweetened lime juice. Added Gibleys gin to raise the ice just off the bottom of the glass. And filled the rest up to about an inch from the top, in Canadian Club Soda. This was the first gin/tonic Ive ever made.. And its now on my requested drink list..

Preference

Somehow I made it through every review on this page and found almost every (with a few exceptions) was claiming that this gin or that gin was the best. I was a Sapphire stalwart for 3 years until recently. I had 3 gins put in front of me in one evening that tasted better to me. Hendricks, Boodles, and last but not least, Magellan. All of them except for Boodles do come in a little more expensive that Sapphire, but oh my were they worth it. I think this just goes to show that whatever you are drinking, try something else. Hey if you are drinking Seagrams or Gilby's, treat yourself to something special from time to time, grab a 750 of Boodles for about 15 bucks. Ask for a bottle of Magellan or Van Gogh for your birthday or Christmas. Graduating from college or got a big promotion? Treat yourself to some Old Raj. Just remember to grab some fresh limes and a coupel bottles of tonic.

I was a vodka drinker for years then switched to Canadian whisky( Crown Royal, Forty Creek, and Seagrams 7). I recently bought a small bottle of Bombay Saphire and loved it. However, I am not a fan of tonic so I drink it with soda and lime. Very tasty.

Different Gins for Different Pallets
By Mister Sinister

A G&T is a great drink. Easy to make so you can enjoy it at home, common bar fare for when you are out with friends, and an excellent choice for those corporate events where you are bored stiff but at least it is an open bar. It is strong but not overpowering when made right, so if you pace yourself you can enjoy the effects without getting plastered (you still shouldn't drive though). As for the different types of gins out there, well your pallet really determines which one is best. Bombay Sapphire is my choice because with good tonic water it brings out the citrus taste of the lime the best for me. You might have a better experience with something else, so try a different gin every now and then, and differnt tonic waters too. Now as for Bombay, or any gin for that matter, being cliche' or trendy I have never even considered whether or not a liquor was the current trend when ordering. If you find something that tastes good to you then order it. The only other criteria that matters is price and whether or not you can afford it/want to pay for it. Some expensive gins I have had were awful, some cheap gins were quite good, and in the end you can find something to your liking in every price range. Enjoy your beverage . . .

Gin and ?
By Wise Old Drunk from NJ

First, I'd like to congratulate all of you for appreciating the fine taste of gin over that low-grade rocket fuel (vodka) that so many millions of knuckleheads are pouring into glasses with god-knows-what-else and calling the drink a "Martini". The only REAL Martini is made with gin. Period. Why? It's all about flavor. To that end, I'd like to add my long-developed and very educated non-opinion: take a taste of each gin, Martini-style (little or no mixer blended in), and try to take notice of the subtle natural flavors (those are juniper berries you taste, which someone in a prior post quite astutely compared to "Christmas trees" :) Pick one that pleases you. Then repeat the experiment with several quality tonics - some will be sweet, some will be rather tart and astringent. (If I've lost you at this point, you're probably better off staying with vodka :) Now, with an ample supply of your two favorites at hand, start experimenting with different proportions. Before long, you will be quite happy, and quite educated as to what your perfect G&T consists of. And please bear in mind that the most important fact - and it IS a fact - is that everyone tastes things a little differently, so there IS NO perfect G&T for everyone. So just enjoy yours, and don't take any baloney from folks who would tell you otherwise. Personally, I enjoy Baffert's gin when I'm making drinks that are very strong (much gin, little mixer), and Gordon's works quite well in strongly soda-pop-laden mixes but does require the accompaniment of a high quality tonic like Schweppes. Just remember rule 1: please YOUR palate - nothing else matters.

Bombay and Club Soda
By miss chin

I love Bombay Saphire straight. Gin and tonics are wonderful, but sometimes I don't care too much for sugary or heavy citrus-ie drinks.I really enjoy just Bombay and club soda with a giant olive or two. It's not fancy, but it's really refreshing. It tones down the sweet taste, sparkles, and goes down easy. I don't know what they call this concotion, but it just works out for me.

Clever Trevor
By Trevor's Dad

First off- I agree with the Wise Old Drunk from NJ about mixin' it up to please YOUR palate. Maybe just because I'm old, too? I gotta pass on this twist that my daughter Trevor (yes, daughter.. is that why she drinks??) stumbled on- Do your standard G&T mix, but use Orangina instead of Tonic- no garnish, just an ice cube. Play with the proportions until you get what you like. I've tried Bombay Sapphire, Plymouth, and Beefeaters so far and my winner is Bombay S. followed by Beefeaters. Orangina is a bit hard to find sometimes, but there's no good substitute. It's carbonated water with 12% tangerine/orange juice with some pulp. Pass it on. I've been calling it Gin-Gina, but let's call it Clevor Trevor, ok?

Best Value

Greenall's gin is the best for the money. Especially if your mixing it. All this talk of expensive gin for G&T should be reserved for martinis.

Oodles of Boodles

Gin and Tonic is the finest drink for a hot summer afternoon known to mankind. My personal preference is for Schweppes Tonic (of course), and either Bombay Sapphire, Boodles, or my current favourite, Hendrick's. The latter is a gorgeously floral gin, utterly delicious and delicate. Yum!

NO LEMONS PLEASE

The beauty of a gin and tonic is it's simplicity. I did recently disagree with a friend over the lemon or lime issue. I insist on a lime but my friend & also my husband say lemon is traditional. Could this be true? I don't drink mixed drinks except for a gt and only in summer. Heaven.

Think Fresh
By W. Churchill

Gin martinis (very dry) with two jumbo olives stuffed with pimento (or with jalapeño on spicy nights), is how I cam to love the spirit of Gin nearly fifty years ago. It is in my humble opinion that the top shelf brands such as Sapphire, Tanqueray, Boodles, and so on, are ALL fine choices. I’ve enjoyed most of these in martinis and gin & tonics and found them to be excellent, even though they do have subtle differences; after all variety is the spice of life. But there is one thing that will destroy a Gin and Tonic faster than a clumsy waiter who dumps it on the floor (or your wife) and that is stale tonic water. I don’t care how tight you screw the cap on its no good after about 24 hrs, this includes Schweppes (my personal favorite). Fresh clean ice, Fresh Schweppes tonic water, Fresh juicy limes, and a great Gin all add up to one of the most refreshing drinks to have ever been assembled. Think fresh and enjoy!

So you like gin?

I like to douse myself with Saphire and then light myself on fire, then I drink the tonic water. That is the true G&T, really gets to me.

My parents used to drink gin & OJ--called an "Orange Blossom" yrs ago. If u want to use cheap gin, mix w/Schweppes or juice of ur choice/pinapple if u like it sweet. If u use a quality gin..like Sapphire, drink straight or w/a splash of quality tonic..Schweppes. (bad tonic can kill a good gin). Lime always instead of lemon for my taste. I use Gilbey's w/Schweppes. Sapphire is smooth...in a snifter glass straight! ;) Tonic ice cubes is the best idea so far!

G is for Gordon's London Dry Gin.
By Micheal Douglas Wiliiam Smith the 3rd

I enjoyed this drink the best, because it was the first love of mine, ina long lived and still active love with alcohol. Being a mod the classy drinks only catch my fancy no beer, no for me and my friends ti can only be a rum and coke, or martini. So gentlemen, I beleive that you all have this side to you, i mean you all return to this site. I am partial to Gordon's but you may enjoy anything different. So I am not here to judge your style or taste but please don't hold mine in hostility. Thank you for listening to my plyte and giving me respect as a fellow drinker.

Ugh! Not for everyone

I've only had this drink once on a BA flight from Dallas to Gatwick. Ya'll must like dry drinks because it took me three hours to nurse mine down. Then again, whatever floats your boat.

many good choices
By miles

Bombay, Tanqueray, and Beefeaters all make deliciously different g&ts, but cheap tonic ruins any of them. Schweppes is the only great tonic I've had. I keep a handle of Beefeaters around for most of my g&ts (it's usually the best value, especially if you appreciate a dry gin) but Tanqueray 10 is my current absolute favorite gin, though there are a bunch I still have to try out.

Gin and Tonic - for skiers

Winter time - Tanqueray Gin and Schweppes Tonic with Lime and Ice on the balcony of a ski lodge in Perisher Valley. The only way to be drunk in winter. Summer time - Tanqueray Gin and Schweppes Tonic with Lime and Ice on the balcony of my home in Sydney. The only way to be drunk in summer

Gin and Tonic
By Don Ulrich

2 oz Tanq #10. 6 oz Schweppes Tonic Water. 1/2 oz simple syrup. 1/4 lime wedge. Put into shaker in the above order but don't shake, stir a few times. Squeeze lime for juice and retain wedge. Pour over ice in a glass. garnish with lime wedge. Perfect.

What to do if you run out of gin

Many years ago, sitting on a veranda in a hotel in Mexico at the end of a great day we ran out of gin (Olso Negro $.90/L but a good gin even this cheap). We had p;enty of ice, limes and tonic but no gin. Tried tequila. Yeah it tastes a bit like dirt at first and it is not as light and refreshing as gin but it's not really bad. If no Olso Negro (or Seagrams in the US) try tequila - its not bad at all. But use real limes and real tonic.

My G&T
By Alec

I keep the gin in the freezer (bombay sapphire in my case) and make sure to chill the glass. Cut a 3/4" think wedge of cucumber, throw it into the glass, add ice cubes, pour in 2-3 oz. gin, then top off with 3 oz. tonic water. Stir, then toss it back into the freezer for a minute to two while the cucumber flavor comes out.

Gin and Tonic - Both Matter!

A good gin and tonic stands up there with the best of drinks. My personal favorites are both Tanqueray and Bombay Sapphire. The two have different, but both excellent tastes. At least for those in the US, give REAL tonic water with pure cane sugar a try. Whole Foods, Boylan's (in glass), or other imports if you can find them have a much better taste if your tasting skills are well developed!

I tried this without gin. I don't tastes to good.

Tanqueray all the way

This is my "go-to" drink. Unless I'm at a martini bar or am in a wine mood, I almost always order a gin and tonic. I favor Tanqueray as the gin. I've had other gins, including Sapphire, but Tanqueray has a certain something that the others don't which I think works well for gin and tonics. Sapphire is good, but in my opinion is almost too smooth/mellow for a gin and tonic. I also agree that the type of tonic you use makes a difference. Unfortunately, where I live now I don't have much of a choice and almost always have to get Canada Dry. >:(

Robin & Ben's Gin

We have always been Gordon’s men- or to be ruthless, what ever is inexpensive at the off license. But, as of tomorrow we will move up in the world as we are have a night in with the 'Rolls Royce' of G&T. I feel we will never look back. And my advice is stock up on limes because there will be a shortage once Robin and I have finished the evening. Cheers to G&T.
