I'm with Kel
By Dan

I've been trying to find the recipe for a rum runner and have come across several, even one made with Gin (wouldn't that be a Gin Runner?) The closest recipe to the one I'm used to is Kel's, but I seem to remember Bacardi light, Bacardi dark & Bacardi coconut rums added to the mix. If this drink is made correctly, it is extrememly strong, but you can't taste the rum, so be carefull cause you're drunk before you know it. P.S. If any of my old bartenders from Ybor City read this, please e-mail me your version of the recipe so I can introduce it to the people in my new home, NY.

We make these in N'awlins, but they are made with Captain Morgan spiced rum, Dekuyper blackberry brandy, Creme de Banana, Grenadine and orange juice.

Correction

Kel is making a Zombie or something real close to it, not a Rum Runner. The above is correct for Rum Runner.

I'm with Kel all the way. I was taught lt. rum, dk. rum, malibu rum, pineapple, oj, top with grenadine. It's a RUM runner for goodness sakes! It makes sense to use 3 different rums. A zombie has lt. rum, dk. rum, and apricot brandy, pineapple, oj, grenadine.

I love "Rum Runners", but my friend and I found a pre-mixed frozen concentrate made by "Bacardi" back in mid '90's like the Daquiri and Pina Colada, but very unfortunately we haven't been able to find it again anywhere. Does anyone know where we can get it.

Rum Runner, not Hurricane
By Bartender

Kel, A rum runner is my favorite drink. You have to have blackberry and banana liquor to make a rum runner. You can add pineapple, orange and cranberry juice to it, but you have to include blackberry and banana liqour. With out that, your making a hurricane or zombie.

Bacardi Rum Runner Mix

I'm not a fan of mixes when I can avoid them (takes all the soul out of the spirits :), but the Bacardi Mixes are back on the market, and we saw their Rum Runner mix at Kroger just a few minutes ago. It'll be in the frozen goods aisle.

NY Bartender here...The concept behind the Zombie to to add as many types of rum yet at the same time masking the taste of them, that first recipe seems more of a Zombie version..New Orleans has it more correct..but hell this is bartending..not splitting DNA cells.

Rum Runners are my favorite...I also make them a little diffrent. Myers Rum, Bacardi Rum, grendine, Pinnapple juice, cranberry juice and orange juice...decorate with sliced pinnaple& cherrys What is even better on a sunny hot day is to save your pinnapple shells (freeze them) and use them as your glass!

Congrats to those from Florida! You can not make a Rum Runner without Banana liquor and Blackberry brandy. It is what it is! The Tiki Bar in Islamorada may be often imitated, but never duplicated!!!

Rum Runner Mix
By Rick

You should be able to get the frozen bacardi Rum Runner mix at any supermarket. Also, another really good drink (if you drink them frozen) is mixing half Rum Runner half Pina Colada... It's been named "Pain In The A$$" If anyone's ever been to Ocean City, MD and went to a bar names Secrets you know what I mean. I think I'll be trying "Kel's" version tonight... Thanks

Daytona chic

Geeze.....men. A rum runner HAS to have the blackberry and the banana or it is not a rum runner!! We make them 'Pains in the A--es' too by swirling them with a pina colada like a candy cane.....topping it with pina colada on top with a rum runner drop in the middle and a 151 bacardi floater. No zombies.....etc. LOL

rumrunners by boston bartender

This is a great drink! I've had the same version in Ft.Lauderdale and the Bahamas. You have to have blackberry brandy and banana liquer in this drink. Start with 1 1/2 oz. bacardi, 1/2 o z. blackberry, 1/2 oz. banana liquer, sour mix, grenadine. Blend with ice to freeze and then top with shot of 151 bacardi. Enjoy!

Carribean Amphibian

My favorite drink. You def need the Blackberry brandy and the Banana liquer. But if you want to take the easy road Bacardi does sell it in pre-made bottles with all the liquor inside. Look for it in liquor stores. Looks like it made to be on the rocks, not frozen though.

10 years + bartending
By Run Around Sue

As we all know, recipes morph over the years, but to get an ACTUAL Rum Runner, follow the very first recipe posted. It is sort of like the younger folks who now think that a martini automatically comes with vodka...us older folk know better. And we've been drinking for a lot longer...

MMMMM.......
By BeenGold

I ain't no bartender, but I am a conniseur of alcohol, and I personally like my Rum Runners like this: Lt. rum, Dk. rum, Malibu rum, pineapple juice, orange juice, and a little grenadine on top, now I first had this drink when I was in the key's where the Rum Runner was originated many years ago, If you do not have the same recipe, then it's all wrong, this is my favorite drink ever, and I ain't no youngster, So try it my way B-4 you say I'm wrong. and I should tell you it is a bit of a creeper in other words you'll be drunk by your 5th one but won't know it yet B-cuz it's so fruity, and it's color is Pink when made right. See me on myspace.com, peace..

FYI-bacardi mix :)

The bottled Bacardi mix is terrible. I used to buy the frozen mix, & add in mangoes, grapefruit & bananas-it was fantastic! Too bad I can't find it anymore, but now that I have these great recipes, I won't need it anymore-thanks everyone!!

one more voice for the keys original
By Carmine

I'm glad a few people came forward to dispute the recipes with juice. Any Florida bartender should know the original Holiday Isle Tiki Bar ingredients: rum, 151, blackberry, banana, grenadine and lime juice. Period. No pineapple, sour, OJ, etc. And always frozen, not on the rocks. Any variations may be fine cocktails, but they're not rum runners.

funny, just looking for a recipe

no arguments with anyone, however I would like to point out that SEVERAL bars in Ft. Myers Beach FL serve a kick a** drink they call a rum runner. I was looking for recipe but what they serve does sound more like Hurricane, no banana flavor, its also pink and topped with 151. I can see where the confusion comes from.

blackberry brandy - Chambord
By Karen, Atlanta GA

Trying to decide if I need to make a trip to the store - can Chambord be used for the Blackberry Brandy or is it completely different? I have all the ingredients for the Tiki Bar recipe but not the brandy - only Chambord.

Kel's Rum Runner
By Throwdown

If y'all ever get out to the west coast, head up to South Lake Tahoe and stop at the Beacon. They are famous, at least on the Left Coast, for their rum runners. Kel's recipe is spot-on to their's, and they will sneak up on you on a sunny day.

Ive found that when making a rum drink that I've never heard of I mis dark rum, Captain Morgan, pineapple juice, a splash of orange and make it pink with Grenadine. Lady came in this weekend asking for Rum Runner and about drank me out of dark rum she had so many. Guess she liked them.
