Rob Roys are ok
By Willis
Great if you like the flavor of scotch. Kind of like a martini but with Scotch, no? I prefer to use a little less vermouth, though.
Traditional Rob Roys are sweet
Originally, Rob Roys were virtually half scotch, half sweet vermouth. Over the years, scotch drinkers thought that they were getting more scotch by ordering these, but requesting that it be not too sweet. It's not an everyday drink, but is a good way to end the day sometimes. The traditional Rob Roy is definitely a "one drink" drink.

Don't overlook the dry or perfect rob roy.
As with manhattans, dry substitutes dry vermouth, while perfect utilizes equal parts of both sweet and dry. Specific parts/ratios are best left to the tastebuds of the imbiber. Experiment!
Ol' Dad loved a Rob Roy
By cynthia
My late father enjoyed an ocassional Rob Roy before dinner. He was from the WWII generation. It's a solid, mature, manly drink which appeals to a prior generation...and as another commenter on this website has said, it's a "one-drink drink".
nocturnal
The Rob Roy is my drink of choice, by far. Perfect drink to nurse for a couple hours and finish off just before bed. 2/3 cup Clan MacGregor, 1/3 cup Martini Rosso, 2 or 3 marachino cherries, and about a teaspoon of the syrup from the cherry jar. Takes the edge off any day, but I suggest eating dinner first. Definitely need a little something in your stomach to handle the amount of booze. Never led to any regrets in the morning, though, and I'm not really much of drinker.
Long time Rob Roy drinker
I tend to like my Rob Roy on the sweet side, up, sometimes with a cherry or sometimes with a twist (On occasion, I've even had it with both!). I did drink 3 at one sitting and that was quite an experince. Occasionally, I'll encounter a bartender that does not know the drink so I'll ask for a Dewar's Manhattan. From time to time I'll have a perfect Rob Roy. I do not like bitters in my Rob Roy. It is a wonderful drink and has allowed me to acquire a taste for scotch.
It is a manhattan
with scotch instead of bourbon. Very nice before dinner cocktail.
Rob Roy
My Late Father drank Manhattan's for all of his adult life and loved them very much. My husband of 29 years made me a Rob Roy with Dewar's and Stock sweet red Rosso Vermouth on ice tonight and I've discovered just how good Whisky and Vermouth go together. thanks Dad and Hubby.
Scotch lover
I am from that older generation and really appreciate drinking a rob roy. I like it in all three variations, sweet, dry and perfect but most often have it up and sweet with no fruit. I usually have it as an apertif rather than at bedtime. Very rarely do I have more than two.
Winter's Perfect Drink
I tend to disagree with the belief that this is a "manly" drink. My parents drank RR's for years, and now this is my winter drink of choice. It certainly warms you up and if done right, tastes great! Too many bartenders out there need to learn how to do this right. I usually send it back if the color is off.
