no cherry
By George Sinclair

the old fashioned is not made by producing a muddled mess of cherry and orange slice. this is a terrible way to try and make a classic recipe. the original dates back to 1895. it did not include cherry paste!

the purpose of the water!
By George Sinclair

soda water or just plain water?, it doesn't matter. the water element is there to moisten the sugar cube, that is all. splash of soda water/ water, not a top up!

Rye Only
By larry

Here are the rules. Stick to them and you will experience a truly sublime cocktail. 2 ozs.rye(don't even think about using anything else) 2 dashes bitters 1 tsp. simple syrup (or 1/2 tsp. sugar and 1/2 tsp. water) Throughly mix the bitters and syrup (if you use sugar make sure it is completely dissolved) add 2 ice cubes and mix in the rye. NO fruit.

Old Fashioned Rediscovered
By Scoo

I've worked behind the bar going on 5 years and here's what I've found regarding the Old Fashioned. Use either bourbon or rye for a straight old fashioned. Definetly NOT scotch of any kind. Reason is b/c of different tastes come off to the drink. You'll need: 2oz Bourbon or Rye (Makers, Woodford Reserve, or Wild Turkey Rye) Angostura Bitters 1Tsp. Table Sugar or 1/2oz Sugar Syrup Cracked Ice Marachino Cherry In a rocks glass add your bourbon or rye and your sugar syrup or table sugar. Dissolve your sugar as best as possible with a table spoon. Add your cracked ice and then add a couple healthy shakes of the Angostura Bitters. Drop in a Marachino cherry for looks and serve it. Variations can be many different concoctions. While for me, one straight O.F. doesn't get me a buzz after one, using 1 oz bourbon and 1oz Southern Comfort (in place of the other oz of bourbon) will. It makes it a completely different take on a familiar drink and is damn tasty. A hit for me and my buddies either drinking or serving. Enjoy.

Ease up, Scooter!
By Nik Edsel

Although I agree with ol' Scoot that an Old-Fashioned should contain bourbon or rye and never scotch(?), it is my belief that Scooter should have a few less of them and submit only one review. We heard you the first time, Tipsy Russell.

You all may be Right but........
By Geo

I have tried rye whisky in several mixed drinks and I can't stand the taste of rye whisky. So I use scotch whisky instead. I really enjoy the taste of scotch but I feel that most of you don't enjoy scotch at all.

I forgot to add that 10 year scotch wisky is my favorite, it has a better taste. Try it sometime for all of you scotch drinkers out there.

supercat

In Wisconsin where the Old Fashioned is almost the State Drink - Brandy is very often used as a substitute for Whiskey. Much better if you ask me. Also, the orange and sugar are muddled but not the cherry - the cherry is added later as garnish.

Lou
By Lou Fili

My personal chioce for this drink is generous dashs of bitters, table sugar to soak up the bitters, shake out any unsaturated sugar, splash of soda (since simple syrup not often available)will quickly and completely disolve the sugar, half an orange slice squeezed, a cherry, crushed ice and fill 'er up with Jack! Muddling the orange slice adds an orange zest flavor which some like. Thre's many ways to do it and no one "right" way.

The Green Arch
By Kielbasaman

The best way to enjoy an Old Fashoned is to make your way to the Green Arch in Cortland, New York. The bartenders, Dom or Chenzo, will treat you to a time tested recipe that has been muddled and enjoyed by regulars for decades.

86 the fruit

Muddled fruit is a very BAD idea in an old fashioned. My father drank these at dinner since I was a child and so I tried it when I became of age(of course);) I've been hooked ever since. I ordered one in San Francisco while on vacation and it was served with fruit muddled in it. It absolutely ruins a drink that is hard enough for a bartender to get right in the first place.

It's a sugar cube!

I learned how to make an Old Fashioned in the late 1940s from an uncle who had worked as a bartender before WWII. His technique was to place a sugar cube (a flat one) in the bottom of the glass, a couple of dashes of bitters onto it, and a bit of water. This was muddled to dissolve the sugar. Next came the cracked ice and whiskey. Half an orange slice on the rim and a cherry dropped into the drink. I was about 10 or 12 at the time and never drank one until I was "legal."

5/5
sugar, muddled fruit, bitters, bourban, soda, ice

I'm surprised that fruit is scorned in the Old Fashioned by some. I'm also surprised that some people get so hostile over a drink. (Go check out the comments on "whiskey sour", they're pretty funny). The recipe on the back of Angostura bitters calls for muddling- that's good enough for me; I think you should muddle that shit, it's more fun. But I'm not a "real" connoisseur of whiskey, so I could be wrong. However, I am having an Eagle Rare on the rocks right now. On to the next drink.....

variety is the spice of ...drinking
By melodiejewel

I see so many opinions of liquors and ways to make this drink - all I can say is, if it tastes good to you, drink it! A great cocktail is like art - you may have your favorites, and I have mine. And we are free to choose something different on a different day. Isn't is lovely there are so many choices? I love America! (My personal favorite is with bourbon, but I would not turn down rye!)
