 Tending Bar: Learn 101 Highball Recipes

Most mixed drinks have predictable ingredients. This article focuses on tricks to make several highballs. There is also an article with shaken and stirred cocktails that we recommend you peruse.

The few tricks that you'll want to learn are in bold text, while the rest of the list should be fairly straight-forward. Learning these drinks, still, should take some time. Mix a few of them if you have the alcohol to spare, and try quizzing yourself on a drink or two.

Simple Highballs:
The traditional recipes for a highball calls for a highball glass, one and a half ounces of liquor, and the mixer and an occassional additional mixer.  Here we list a series of highballs that can be made using this simple formula.  Click for more information on mixing highballs.

Often drinkers will ask for a particular brand of liquor instead of using the name of the type of liquor.  If someone asks you for one of these, look to the bottle to tell you what type of alcohol it is.

Simple Gin Highballs:

 

1 oz. Gin, Tonic to fill
Garnish with a lime wedge.

 

1 oz. Gin, Ginger Ale to fill
Garnish with a lime wedge.
Chillers always have Ginger ale.

 

1 oz. Gin, Soda Water to fill
Garnish with a lemon twist.

 

1 oz. Gin, Orange Juice to fill

 

1 oz. Gin, Grapefruit Juice to fill

 

1 oz. Gin, Lemon-Lime Soda to fill
Garnish with a lime wedge.

 

1 oz. Gin, Collins Mix to fill
Garnish with a cherry and an orange slice.

Making Collins Mix

Every collins calls for Collins Mix.  You can buy this in the store, or your can make it at home. Collins mix is:

  • 1 ounce Lemon Juice
  • 1 teaspoon Superfine Sugar
  • 3 ounces Club Soda

Simple Vodka Highballs:

 

1 oz. Vodka, Tonic to fill
Garnish with a lime wedge.

 

1 oz. Vodka, Ginger Ale to fill
Garnish with a lime wedge.
Chillers always have Ginger ale.

 

1 oz. Vodka, Orange Juice to fill

 

1 oz. Vodka, Cranberry Juice to fill
Garnish with a lime wedge.
Most Cranberries come from Cape Cod.

 

1 oz. Vodka, 4 oz. Orange Juice, 1 oz. Cranberry Juice
Don't Stir.

 

1 oz. Vodka, 4 oz. Grapefruit Juice, 1 oz. Cranberry Juice

 

1 oz. Vodka, Grapefruit Juice to fill.

 

1 oz. Vodka, Grapefruit Juice to fill.
Rim Highball Glass with Salt.

 

1 oz. Vodka, Pineapple and Cranberry Juice to fill.

 

1 oz. Vodka, Ginger Ale to fill.
Garnish with a lime wedge.
Since Vodka is from Russia, this drink is appropriately named.


Simple Rum Highballs:

 

1 oz. Rum, Tonic to fill
Garnish with a lime wedge.

 

1 oz. Rum, Cola to fill

 

1 oz. Rum, Cola to fill
Garnish with a lime wedge.

 

1 oz. Rum, Ginger Ale to fill
Garnish with a lime wedge.

 

1 oz. Rum, Collins Mix to fill
Garnish with a cherry and an orange slice.

 

1 oz. Rum, Orange Juice to fill

 

1 oz. Coconut Rum, Pineapple Juice to fill

 

1 oz. Rum, Lemon-Lime Soda to fill
Garnish with a lime wedge.

 

1 oz. Rum, Cranberry Juice to fill

Simple Whiskey Highballs:

 

1 oz. Whiskey, Water to fill
Garnish with a lemon twist.

 

1 oz. Bourbon Whiskey, Water to fill
Garnish with a lemon twist.

 

1 oz. Whiskey, Soda to fill
Garnish with a lemon twist.

 

1 oz. Whiskey, Ginger Ale to fill

 

1 oz. Whiskey, Soda and Ginger Ale to fill

 

1 oz. Whiskey, Collins MIx to fill
Garnish with a cherry and an orange slice.

 

1 oz. Whiskey (Seagram's 7-Crown), Lemon-Lime Soda (7-Up)to fill
